Well, Miss Mouse has officially joined the ranks of carnivorous creatures. Yesterday she had chicken with sweet potatoes and apple for lunch.
It was interesting to read the differences of opinion on meat in my parenting books. Many of the books I have are “green momma” types with discussions on baby-wearing and attachment parenting and whatnot.
And many of those green-type-folks are also vegetarian. Vehemently vegetarian. To read some of them, you would think that offering my offspring meat was akin to serving up a bowl of rat poison. Geez louise! Humans were designed to be omnivores, people. Just look at our teeth.
Thankfully, my very favorite baby cookbook — Top 100 Baby Purees by Annabel Karmel — takes a much more balanced approach to meat and provides a number of good recipes for “first tastes.”
The concept of pureed meat is a wee bit gross, but this is one of those moments where making your own makes all the difference, as the only thing nastier than pureed meat is processed, jarred canned meat. Shudder.
