ENTirely too many drugs
July 28th, 2009
Last night, Miss Mouse started her sixth course of antibiotics in just over two months. She’s had a constant stream of ear infections that the meds just haven’t been able to get on top of. Now, I’m a pro-medicine momma (I heart vaccines), but even I know that is way too many drugs.
So I was actually relieved when they referred us to a children’s ENT specialist. At this point, I’m thinking “bring on the tubes,” because continuing our current revolving door of infection and drugs just isn’t okay for several reasons.
1) It’s becoming more and more clear that overuse of antibiotics diminishes their effectiveness in the long run. Right now, my family is doing our part to breed super-bugs that don’t respond to the drugs. Goodie.
2) Summer is the slow season for ear infections. They really crank up when the cold weather rolls around. Which means if we don’t figure out a better solution to this problem, Miss Mouse could be in for a rough winter.
3) This I just learned — when she has an ear infection, Miss Mouse is basically hearing underwater. Everything is muffled and distorted. And at this stage in her development, when she’s learning and practicing her verbal skills, it’s really important that she be able to hear properly.
We’ll finish up this round of antibiotics and then we have an appointment with the specialist in a couple weeks. I’ll keep you posted.
