Shy Girl

August 8th, 2009

Miss Mouse is going through a bit of a mommy phase right now. She tends to follow me around the room, crawling doggedly from spot to spot as I move and tugging on my pant legs to pick her up. If I should dare to leave the room without her, tears ensue. And whenever anyone comes up to talk with her, she gets shy and buries her head in my or Josh’s shoulder.

I know I need to encourage her to be a big girl and not a wee wall flower. But the thing is, I secretly find it totally endearing.

Not the following me around and shrieking parts so much, but the shoulder nuzzle. Oh my. What could push all those warm and fuzzy mommy buttons more than having your child snuggle into you because you are, in fact, the person she loves most in the world and your arms are a place of refuge? It’s hugely affirming.

And Miss Mouse isn’t always a cuddly baby. She tends to fidget when you hold her too long and only really likes to cozy in together when she’s sleepy. So I secretly relish those snuggley moments when she decides to hide from the strange person talking to her (who might be anyone from a random person at the grocery store to church members to extended family she hasn’t seen in a while).
