Yup, it’s tube time. We met with the ENT specialist this morning and Miss Mouse is slated for surgery some time on Tuesday. I’ll probably be a nervous wreck the day of, but for right now, I’m thrilled!
I went into the appointment jazzed up and ready to fight for tubes. I had done some research and was on board, but was secretly afraid that the doctors would want to “wait and see.” I was ironically worried that the antibiotics would have worked (nothing like hoping your kid’s medication failed), that she’d be infection free, and that they’d take a conservative approach.
I shared our history of the last three months, the doc peeked in her ears, and announced: “So, what are you doing next Tuesday?” And that was pretty much that. Apparently she’s sort of the poster child for ear tubes. Pick a risk factor — any risk factor — and she’s probably got it:
- She’s had three months solid of ear infections
- Antibiotics barely seem to slow them down
- It’s summer (and not even ear infection season!)
- She’s still really young (so her ear canals aren’t going to sort themselves out naturally for a few years)
- Hr family has a history of ear infections (thanks, dad)
- She’s in day care
So bring on the tubes. I had to laugh, though, when the nurse said — “Oh, the tubes will be great. She’ll be a whole new baby!” And I’m thinking — does it get better? We’ve already got the perfect baby!
Well, except for the sleeping thing. We’re trying not to get our hopes up that Miss Mouse’s sleeping “issues” stemmed from the ears and that fixing them will result in blissful nights of uninterrupted sleep.
Nope, not imagining that at all…
