Einstein’s Not So Smart

October 27th, 2009

Call me petty. Call me smug. Call me…vindicated.

Did you hear the news? Disney (owner of Baby Einstein) will be offering a refund to parents who bought the Baby Einstein DVDs, on the grounds that — gasp — the videos don’t actually make your baby smarter as their marketing has long implied.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a TV hater. Josh and I watch a lot of movies and are avid House fans. And I watched my fair share of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood and Sesame Street when I was a kid. But not when I was a baby, and that’s the kicker.

This craze of baby-oriented television shows and DVDs that explicitly target the 1-3 year old set baffles me. I’m looking forward to someday watching The Lion King and Toy Story with Miss Mouse, but I’m in no hurry. Besides, given how much enjoyment she gets out of shredding magazines and banging wooden spoons on pots and pans, why would I shell out the $15 for a multi-media experience?

my favorite part is that the videos entice you by saying that your baby will learn about their body parts and all 5 senses! Because if you don't give them some solid educational television, THEY MIGHT NOT DISCOVER THOSE THINGS! Imagine the horror.
