Book Rave-iews: The Going to Bed Book and Time for Bed

November 20th, 2009

I love bedtime with Miss Mouse. One of the last things we do together (of course) is to read a story. Two, actually. One silly and one sweet, they pave the way for a happy transition to sleep.

The first is “The Going to Bed Book” by Sandra Boynton. As you may know, I’m a huge Boynton fan, and so is Miss Mouse. In this rampantly silly book, Boynton’s usual cast of animals are preparing for bed on board a ship (no idea why) and they prance through the bedtime routines of bath, tooth brushing, pajamas, exercise (huh?) and sleep. It’s very fun and the final page is glorious — “The moon is high, the sea is deep. They rock and rock and rock to sleep.” Love it.

After we’ve had a good giggle, we move on to “Time for Bed” by Mem Fox. This book was a gift from my mom for Miss Mouse’s birthday and it is magical. It’s an animal-based bedtime book with sweet rhyming couplets and beautiful drawings. It starts off (appropriately enough for my girl) with “It’s time for bed, little mouse little mouse / Darkness is falling all over the house.”

Each page follows that basic setup — “It’s time for bed little goose little goose / the stars are out and on the loose.” — and they flow together beautifully. The last creature in bed, naturally, is a human child. It’s a must-have.
