Family by Choice

November 22nd, 2009

Miss Mouse spends a lot of time with her aunts. Aunt Melissa is Josh’s sister, a saintly being who regularly babysits on virtually no notice. Aunt Meg is Miss Mouse’s beloved godmother who appears frequently at the house to lavish attention on our girl.

Meg is my best friend and bears no actual relation to me or my offspring. But she’s family nonetheless. I didn’t grow up in a family that bestowed familial titles upon close friends, but I’m an only child and so I bring no aunts or uncles to the parenting table with me.

I loved growing up as part of a large extended family with lots of aunts and uncles and cousins and I saw no reason not to continue those traditions despite being an “only.” And so we have dubbed a number of my dear friends “aunts.”

There’s Aunt Meg, of course. And Aunt April (pictured below) who was in our wedding and just returned from a two year mission stint in Haiti. She has a particular knack for bonding with both dogs and babies and both Riley and Miss Mouse adore her.

Then there’s Aunt Suzy who lives in California and has, sadly, not yet met my girl. But we’ve recently discovered the magical world of web chats and the two were introduced that way.

None of Miss Mouse’s adoptive aunts have kids yet, but I’d imagine they will, and so Miss Mouse will grow up with maternal cousins to love and play with. Family is great.
