Timing is Everything

November 4th, 2009

I get up every morning at 4:50 am…

…except that I just can’t bring myself to get up that early. There is this huge mental difference between 5am and 4:50. I mean, who can face getting up at 4am??

My solution: set the clock in my bedroom ahead ten minutes. I set my alarm for 5am, rather than the dreaded 4:50, hop in the shower immediately upon waking up and then pat myself on the back when I get downstairs to the kitchen and it’s only 5:15. Man, I’m quick.

The weird thing is — it works. Even though I know perfectly well that I’ve reset my clock and that, technically, I am getting up before 5, somehow being able to set my alarm to that more palatable time works for me.

Go figure.

Makes sense to me! I think there is something unfinished about seeing 4:50 on the clock – makes you want to lie in bed until it rounds up to 5:00.
