Judged by the Fashion Police

January 11th, 2010

I know I’m not a fashion plate, but there’s nothing like having this reality pointed out for you by a complete stranger.

There’s an upscale resale store in our area called Avalon Exchange that advertises a good cut and immediate payment when you consign stuff with them. I’ve been in a couple times and it’s pretty trendy, but I found some things I liked, too.

During the most recent culling of my closet, I picked out a bag full of my most stylish and least worn things to take to Avalon. When I marched in, the intimidatingly good looking and trendy salesclerk (who was all of about 20) reminded me that they accept things based on brand, style, condition and their need and told me I could wander around the shop as they assessed my bag.

When I came back up to the counter, I was coolly informed that they could really only take one pair of shoes out of the lot and they offered me $4.35 for them.

Man, did I feel frumpy.

I know exactly how you feel. I cleaned out my closet and realized that most of my "new" clothes came from thrift/resale stores. I was too worried about rejection to take them to our trendy consignment shop. Thank goodness Goodwill never judges.
