You know you’re a parent when…

January 1st, 2010

…you’re in bed well before midnight on New Year’s Eve, after having spent the evening doing housework.

We took down all of our Christmas decorations last night. It felt pretty early to be doing that, but I was following wisdom from my mom. Her theory on holiday decorations is to leave them up as long as it makes you happy to look at them. Whenever they stop making you happy — be it the end of December or mid-February — take them down.

And so I did.

A big part of the impetus for the project was my weariness of keeping my child off the tree. Miss Mouse’s early reverence for the pretty ornaments faded to nothing and I felt like I simply could not utter one more “nice touches, please” while she yanked things off the branches. Hopefully by next year, she’ll be in a much more controlled frame of mind when it comes to the tree!
