I ate a lot of bagels yesterday. I’d prefer to just leave it at that — nice and vague — but blogging is about honesty and so I am forced to admit that it was three. I ate three bagels yesterday.
Okay, fine. Three and a half.
Look, it wasn’t intentional. It’s not like I woke up yesterday morning and said to myself — “Today I’m going to carb load on delectable round bread products.” It just sort of happened.
A co-worker brought in a big box of Panera bagels to the office. I love Panera bagels. And so, at 8am, I helped myself to a plain one with sun-dried tomato cream cheese. And it was good.
Then, I respectfully restrained myself to allow others access to the bounty. By lunchtime, though, several lonely bagels remained and thus it was only natural that I munch on a cinnamon sugar bagel for dessert.
I thought that would be the end of the whole bagel affair. But I was wrong. An after work errand brought me past a local coffee shop whose signboard proclaimed the presence of hummus cucumber bagel sandwiches within. Oh dear me. A toasted everything bagel with hummus and cucumber? How could I say no to that? (Answer: I couldn’t.)
Now thoroughly stuffed with carbohydrates, I staggered home. My offspring wanted a snack. I tried to offer her a bagel with hummus (which she frequently enjoys). No dice. Now I was faced with half a bagel that was going to go to waste…
I couldn’t let it happen. It was a matter of civic duty to help that bagel fulfill its purpose in life. No need to thank me. Just doing my duty.
