Several people have asked why we even need an in utero name since we know that Porthos is a boy. Why not just name him and go by that?
Excellent question. Here’s the deal. We have a few names in mind for Porthos once he arrives. In fact, there’s a strong front runner that we’re pretty set on. But we’re choosing not to share that name with the world — much to the frustration of friends and family alike.
Here’s why: for some reason, when you tell people what name you’re considering for your offspring, they seem to take this as an invitation to offer their opinions (frequently critical) on your selection. I’m not quite sure why. It’s like an unstoppable, universal human reflex. And quite frankly, unsolicited opinions of that nature make me very cranky.
Fear not — the name we have in mind isn’t totally weird and zany. Although it is a running joke in our family, we wouldn’t actually name our son Tiglath Pileser. I swear.
It’s a great name. You’ll just have to take my word on it until September.
