Happy Mother’s Day!
I spent a lovely day with my family today. Miss Mouse was so excited to celebrate Mother’s Day that she decided to get up at 5:15am so we could spend more time together. Happily, she atoned for this over-enthusiasm by taking a nice two-hour nap this afternoon, allowing me to do the same! Her other gift was a Milky Way candy bar, presented to me with great solemnity. What can I say? She knows what I like.
My house was adorned with flowers — a beautiful arrangement arrived yesterday from my parents and I awoke from my afternoon snooze to find a bouquet from my husband awaiting me. Yay! My beloved also presented me with my heart’s desire: an IOU for a massage. I love love love getting massages but rarely splurge and treat myself to one. I can’t wait!
At church today, I was the worship leader. One of my tasks as such is to offer an opening prayer. I wanted to do a Mother’s Day prayer, but also wanted it to resonate as widely as possible throughout the congregation. Here’s what I came up with.
We pray for those who are mothers, that today will be a day of special blessing for them.
We pray for those to whom motherhood was an unexpected or even unwanted gift and for whom parenting is a struggle. Give them patience and strength and help them to find joy in their journey.
And finally we pray for those without mothers – for the children who are alone and neglected. Help us as a body of believers to reach out to the lonely and the afraid and to be for them the hands of God.
