An Overly Personal Update

September 17th, 2010

Warning: This post contains personal details of my reproductive organs and includes the words “cervix” and “membranes.” You’ve been warned.

As of today, Baby2 is officially late. He was due to arrive yesterday, and everyone (including our doctors) is pretty surprised that he isn’t here yet. Second babies tend to come faster than first, and Miss Mouse was two days early. But our son is already proving himself to be a rebel and is refusing to show up on anyone’s schedule but his own.

We checked in with our doc today, who pronounced my weight, pulse and blood pressure to be good, then went rooting around in my nether regions to check my cervix. I’m dilated a whopping 1 cm. Oh joy. Oh bliss.

As he finished up, he remarked — “Well, the good news is that I can reach your cervix. But I’d end up giving you a tonsillectomy if I tried to strip the membranes so we won’t be doing that.

In other words, I’m still not moments away from giving birth. It didn’t come as much of a surprise, but just to be safe, Josh and I had brought our fully-packed hospital bag along in the car. I have a girlfriend who went in for a checkup only to be told she was 6cm dilated and to hustle her butt to the hospital. I was kind of hoping that would be us, too. It wasn’t.

So now I have to get up off the couch and go bounce on my pilates ball for a while to see if I can shake him loose…

2 days late isn't that late! Heidi was almost 2 weeks. And. And I hate to tell you about this (because they certainly wouldn't let it get to this point in this day and age) but Stephanie was due ONE FULL MONTH before she was actually born. Not that I wish that kind of wait on you.
