Checking In, Checking Up

October 18th, 2010

Miss Mouse had her two year well-baby appointment today. She weighed in at 27 pounds and measured 34 inches, putting her smack at in the 50th percent for both. Interestingly, if you double a kid’s height at age two, it’s supposed to give you a pretty fair estimate of how tall they’ll be when fully grown. If that’s right, our girl is headed for about 5′ 8″ which is a reasonable guess, given that I’m 5′ 9″.

In addition to the physical checkup, the doctor ran us and her through a checklist of developmental milestones. And I don’t want to brag but…

…heck, who am I kidding? I’m her mother. Of course I want to brag! Miss Mouse is well ahead of her age curve developmentally. I believe the doctor actually used the word “exceptional.” That’s my girl!

We chatted a bit with the doctor about our lifestyle and habits and she confirmed that our decision to avoid television probably had something to do with Miss Mouse’s fabulousness — particularly her verbal skills. Reading still beats TV watching. Our doc did a great job of putting into words our feelings about TV. She said — “There is absolutely nothing on television that will make her life better at her age.” I thought that was a brilliant summary. Not that it’s evil or bad (though much of television is, I’m convinced) just that, for a two-year-old, nothing out there in TV-land would actually help her, despite all the claims of “educational programming.”

And so, her date with the boob tube has been pushed still further into the future. Plus, now that we have a second kiddo in the house, I’d imagine it’ll be quite some time before our girl gets to know the TV in a personal way. After all, it’ll be another two years before we even consider letting Little Bear near it!
