My Friend, Sippy Cup
November 2nd, 2010
Toddler’s aren’t great with articles. Or pronouns. I get that. Thus, I didn’t pay much attention to the way Miss Mouse referred to her sippy cup. It was usually something like – “I want sippy cup” – or – “Where is sippy cup?”
But lately I’ve noticed that this trend is more than just a missing article. She’s doing some serious anthropomorphizing when it comes to that pink plastic cup. I think I need to start capitalizing the name — it’s not a sippy cup. It’s more like, Sippy Cup, a close and personal friend.
Tonight it really came to a head when she was playing make believe with Josh. I was feeding (and burping) Little Bear, and she was bringing her stuffed animals to Josh, one by one, so that he could duly burp them as well.
Then, suddenly, she presented her father with her sippy cup. Initially, he thought perhaps her stuffed monkey wanted to take a wee nip from the cup. Oh no. Apparently Sippy Cup needed to be burped. So there he was, holding a pink plastic cup to his shoulder and thumping it gently.
I laughed so hard I almost cried.
