Earning a Merit Badge
January 9th, 2011
I don’t know who might be responsible for handing out breastfeeding merit badges, but if such a person exists, I think I might — finally — qualify for one. Nursing has gone much more smoothly with Little Bear (thank heavens) but it has still taken quite a while to really feel comfortable doing it on the go. It’s one thing to whip out a boob and feed the kid at home, with the assistance of a nice breastfeeding pillow and an utter lack of regard for modesty. It’s quite another thing to try that same maneuver in public!
But yesterday I conquered that hurdle, managing to nurse Little Bear at a very crowded, very public play area at the local mall. There were probably at least 50 people nearby at any given moment, including other parents sitting three feet away, but I fed my wee creature with confidence and decorum.
It got a bit touch and go (flash and go?) for a minute when Miss Mouse came over to see what was going on an attempted to lift up my nursing apron (affectionately known as a Hooter Hider) to confirm that her brother was indeed under there. Eek!
