In which a Bug is discovered masquerading as a Bear

January 28th, 2011

The problem with assigning a nom de blog to your child before he actually arrives is that you run the risk of getting it wrong. I used Miss Mouse’s real name in the blog for months before switching over to her secret blog identity. At that point, she was clearly and indelibly “Miss Mouse” — a nickname my mom had already bestowed upon her in daily life.

Then along came Baby2 and I knew I wanted to use a pseudonym for him from the get-go so we selected Little Bear. It was a good guess but, as it turns out, he is not a Bear. He just isn’t. I can’t bring myself to call him that in real life and when, at his four month well-baby appointment tonight, he clocked in somewhere around the 30th percentile for weight, it just sealed the deal.

It turns out that my little man is much more Bug-like. And so Bug he shall be. I like that this nickname also brings with it the potential for creative modifiers. Baby Bug. Brother Bug. Love Bug. Snuggle Bug. Oh, the opportunities are endless.

Goodbye, Bear. Hello, Bug!

I like Bug. It is also the nickname of his father when he was a child. :-)

Oh No! I've already bought three years worth of bear Christmas ornaments!! You're going to have to change it back, that's all there is to it. I mean really, a bug Christmas ornament??? grrrrr.

As this is all new to me – blogging, I mean – I am a little behind the 8-ball. Be that as it may, I, too, had a Bug – he is now known as Daddy or Josh. He has grown considerably since then, and I have every confidence that this Bug will, too. But they are so cute when they are little!
