Botanical Bentos

February 20th, 2011

Our Saturday adventure this week was to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. It’s a pretty magical place — huge and sprawling with room after room full of greenery and flowers. Well, at this time of year it was mostly greenery. Poor Miss Mouse had been promised a bunch of beautiful flowers to admire and was a bit disappointed. Or maybe that was me.

In any case, it was still a good outing. They had a huge model railroad system set up that entranced every child within viewing distance, and Miss Mouse loved all the various water features.

In an effort to a) eat healthy, b) save money, and c) try out my new bento boxes, I packed our lunches. This one was Miss Mouse’s:

PB&J; on whole wheat bread, cut into crustless sandwich strips. Holiday-shaped pretzels. Applesauce (yes the container had a lid!) and craisins. The hearts were strawberry fruit leather that I cut out with a cookie cutter.

Mine was similar:

PB&J;, pretzels, clementine orange sections, red and yellow bell pepper with ranch dressing, and a cheese stick.
