A Solid Success

March 28th, 2011

I learned something very important about my son last night: do not get in between that boy and his food unless you want to lose a finger.

Baby Bug tackled his first meal last night and it was a smashing smushing success.  While Josh, Miss Mouse, and I dined on beef stew, the little man did battle with an overripe banana.  And it was quite a battle.  While Buggie definitely had the will to consume, the practical application took a bit of work.  But just look at the steely determination in his eyes…

“Hold still…I’m gonna eat you!”

This was our first foray into the realm of baby-led-solids and I was very pleased with how it went.  The hardest part for me was resisting the urge to help him!  Independent eating is at the heart of BLS so my job was simply to make the food available — he had to figure out how to get it in his mouth.

A mauled banana gets real slimy real fast so to help him out, I rolled it in finely ground oatmeal.  Then he was able to get a pretty good grip on his prey.

I’m glad that Buggie enjoyed his dinner, but holy cow.  The mess.  May Martha Stewart have mercy on my soul.  The pictures don’t really do justice to the destruction he left in his wake.  There was banana goo in his hair, in his diaper, ground into the high chair, and up his nose.  The floor actually fared pretty well, thanks to the ever-helpful furry vacuum cleaner who took up residence under the high chair, wagging happily.

Yay Banana Bug! You think that was messy? Bug will most probably continue to shock and amaze you with the messes he's gonna create. He is, after all, a boy.

Wow. I'm intrigued, but it sounds like a lot more work than baby food!

@Pomegranate — Your comment made me laugh because one of the big reasons I'm excited about the idea of BLS is that is seems so much easier (to me) than messing with baby food! :-) I made all of Miss Mouse's baby food and it was pretty time consuming.
