Bedtime Success

April 4th, 2011

I am feeling very proud of myself, having successfully tucked Miss Mouse into bed all by myself.  She even stayed there!  It was a moment of Love and Logic magic — it just took me a while to find the right phrasing.

It was touch and go, with several trips to the potty, and many hugs.  A seriously quivering lip also made an appearance for a while, but I managed to hold it at bay.  I could feel the frustration rising, but I took a deep breath and tried very hard to think of a good “A or B” choice for her that would resonate.

Miss Mouse,” I said firmly, “It is bedtime.  You can either go to bed happy, or go to bed crying.  That is your decision, but those are your two choices.  Do you want to go to bed happy or go to bed crying?

And darned if she didn’t break into a huge smile, flop back onto her pillow, and announce — “Go to bed happy!

Amazing.

Great choices you gave her – pat yourself on the back for that!! Erin would be proud.

This morning, she was still talking about it. "We go to bed happy," was the refrain throughout breakfast! We did several "high fives for going to bed happy" and talked about how fun it is to go to bed happy. I'll be curious to see how tonight goes.

Well that's pretty cool. Maybe you've hit on something that will last!

  4. Kate says:

Yeah…not so much. Tonight didn't go so well. Sigh.
