I am feeling very proud of myself, having successfully tucked Miss Mouse into bed all by myself. She even stayed there! It was a moment of Love and Logic magic — it just took me a while to find the right phrasing.
It was touch and go, with several trips to the potty, and many hugs. A seriously quivering lip also made an appearance for a while, but I managed to hold it at bay. I could feel the frustration rising, but I took a deep breath and tried very hard to think of a good “A or B” choice for her that would resonate.
“Miss Mouse,” I said firmly, “It is bedtime. You can either go to bed happy, or go to bed crying. That is your decision, but those are your two choices. Do you want to go to bed happy or go to bed crying?“
And darned if she didn’t break into a huge smile, flop back onto her pillow, and announce — “Go to bed happy!“
