29 Gifts, Day Six: Extra Zzzzz’s
May 6th, 2011
I’m a morning person. I wake completely the moment my alarm goes off and am usually in the shower within two minutes of opening my eyes. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve hit the snooze button in my life. For nearly two years, I got up at 4:50 am each day to beat the morning rush hour, and it really wasn’t hard.
My husband is my polar opposite.
Mornings are the bane of his existence. He communicates primarily by grunts for the first half an hour (at least) after he awakens and I suspect that my cheerfulness in the early hours of the day actually cause him physical pain. Prior to having children, sleeping until 10 was invariably an important part of his Saturday routine.
These days, the baby wakes at 5am and Miss Mouse is usually up by 7 on the weekends. Poor man. Friday is his day off, but he still drags himself out of bed at 6 to help get our kids up, dressed, fed, and safely delivered to day care.
My gift to him today was getting the kids ready and taking them to school so he could sleep in. I confess that I planned it ahead. I told him the night before and I think the anticipation of sleeping in was itself a gift! I’ve very much enjoyed each gift I’ve given so far but I think this one actually brought me the most joy because I knew with certainty that it meant a great deal to its recipient.
