Getting My Zumb-On

While I remain enthusiastic about the wonders of Weight Watchers, I do recognize that my quest to beat the baby weight (and dig myself out of periodic holes of overindulgence) requires exercise as well as smart eating.  Exercise is an area where I tend to come up short, but I’m vowing to do better.

Thus it was that tonight I embarked on my first Zumba class.  Zumba, for those unfamiliar, is an aerobics class set to the rhythms of Latin dance.  Everyone I know who does Zumba sings its praises as a great cardio workout and a lot of fun so my best friend Meg and I went to a class at the local rec center tonight.

If I had had a video camera at the class, I would probably have become an instant Internet superstar as the ridiculous scenes of me lumbering and sweating around the room would instantly have gone viral, to the amusement of the world.

Perhaps it’s just as well that no such video exists.

Suffice to say that Latin dance is tough stuff, no matter how easy our perky 20-something instructor made it look.  But it was a lot of fun and a terrific workout.  And I think that, once I start to learn the rhythms, it will also do good things for my body image. If I can start to look graceful as I salsa and cha-cha and rumba my way to better health, I suspect I’ll feel better about my body, in all its squishy maternal glory.
