For the Sake of Charlie Brown

February 13th, 2012

This evening, Miss Mouse and I addressed her hand-made valentines.  I had gotten a class list and was prepared to read out the names while she picked which valentine to give to which friend.

I was unprepared for her to immediately offer this comment — “I don’t want to give one to everyone.  Just my friends.

Ack!  Where did this mean creature come from and where is my daughter?

I nipped that plan in the bud right away, of course.  While I never suffered any Valentine’s Day trauma as a child (thank goodness), I think we’ve all seen the Charlie Brown special where the poor guy pathetically checks his mail box all day hoping for a valentine.

It’s soul-crushing just to watch a cartoon go through it, never mind the prospect of having your daughter perpetuate that kind of suffering!

She acquiesced without struggle though, and cheerfully assigned each of the 22 names on the list a valentine.  Whew.

This is really very interesting. I suppose, if you think about it, you give things you've made to your friends – not to everybody you know. The concept of understanding that someone might feel bad by being excluded is perhaps too advanced for a 3 year old.

I think you could be right. Compassion and empathy are concepts that need to be reinforced — often by example. Which is how people end up without them!

I think that requiring kids to give to every kid is for the best–especially since she would probably be crushed if she learned that some of the people she thinks of as friends maybe don't see her in the same light? Not sure if that's something Mousie runs into yet, but I can imagine it would be pretty heartbreaking.
