I wanted to do something special for my littles in celebration of Valentine’s Day and opted for baked goods. What better way to show your love than heart-shaped chocolate chip scones? I baked them last night and carefully set the table this morning. Heart plates. Pink cups. Heart scones. And a page of Valentine stickers for Miss Mouse.
Having set the scene (and letting my husband sleep in as a Valentine’s Day treat) I headed upstairs to wake the sleeping beauties. We pranced downstairs together in gleeful anticipation of the delicious breakfast…
…only to discover that the dog had cleaned their plates in our absence.
Sigh. Luckily for all concerned, the recipe made a big batch and there were plenty of scones in reserve.
If you’re ever looking for an easy V-Day treat, you can’t go wrong with these.
Chocolate Chip Heart Scones
3 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup cold butter
1 1/2 cups mini chocolate chips
1 cup buttermilk
2 Tbs butter, melted
Sugar for sprinkling
Preheat oven to 425.
Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or fingers, mixing until coarse crumbs form. Stir in chocolate chips. Add buttermilk and stir until ingredients are moistened and soft dough forms.
Gather dough into a ball, pressing gently to hold together. Turn out onto slightly floured work service and knead briefly.
Roll dough out to approximately 1/2 inch thick and cut with heart cookie cutters. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Brush scones with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake for 10 – 12 minutes or until golden. Cool on wire rack. Serve warm. Makes approximately 16 two inch hearts.
