The Countdown to Kentucky
March 29th, 2012
See that brightly-colored paper chain adorning my window? That sucker is the key to my continued sanity for the next month and a half.
My daughter is three, which means her sense of time is…iffy. We were excited to share the news of our impending move with her as soon as it became official, but we have since been treated to a daily barrage of queries as to when we’re going to be leaving.
“Are we going to Kentucky after breakfast?”
“When I come home from school, will it be time to go to Kentucky?”
“I will go to bed, and when I wake up, it’s time to go to Kentucky, right?”
I needed a way to make the waiting period concrete for her. Telling her we’ve still got six weeks to go wasn’t going to cut it. What does “six weeks” mean when you’re three? Nada.
Thus, the paper chain. One link for every day between now and the move. We remove a link each day after school so she can see the chain shrink. We also marked a few interim events on the chain — Nana and Papu’s arrival in town and Easter, to name a few — to give her things to look forward to as we slowly count down the days to the move.
