Where’s the Beef?
June 2nd, 2012
I started and ended my day with steak — steak and eggs for breakfast and a rib-eye steak sandwich for dinner. I know that the health-conscious folks out there will be cringing at this unseemly protein binge, but those health-conscious folks weren’t at the SmallCounty Beef Festival.
Yup, Beef Festival.
It was a lot like a county fair, but the livestock was mostly all cooked. The day kicked off with breakfast (steak, of course) and focused around a big grill-off with dozens of groups showing off their burgers and barbecues to win the prize. There was a little petting zoo, some games for the kids, a bounce house, arts and crafts, and live music in the evening.
The highlight of the afternoon for my kids was an old-fashioned ice cream social hosted by a local funeral parlor. No, I’m not 100% why they were the hosts, but they were dishing out ice cream on the lawn, so we showed up!
In the midst of all this beef and dairy bliss, we headed over to some local nature trails for “adventure day” activities, including a Creek Walk where we splashed about in the creek with nets. Briefly. The water was really cold.
(The unfamiliar face in the picture is Jayden. As is frequently the case with Miss Mouse, she instantly befriended a complete stranger.)
Then it was back to the festival for more cow petting and bounce-housing and live country music. We danced and played and had steak sandwiches and corn dogs for dinner. It was fabulous.
And in case any of those health-conscious folks are still reading, I’ll say this really fast — wealsohadfunnelcake.
