Jesus Loves You. Have a Zucchini.

July 6th, 2012

When we interviewed at CountryChurch, one thing that immediately caught my eye was an outreach activity called the Free Farmers Market.  The name says it all — throughout the summer, the folks of the church plant extra rows in their (really big) home gardens, then give away the extra produce (along with homemade baked goods) at a free farmer’s market at the church on the last Saturday of the month.

Swoon.

Could anything be cooler?  Oh wait, yes.  They also serve a free hot breakfast to anyone who happens by.  Biscuits and gravy.  Egg casserole.  Muffins.  The works.

Everything about the project speaks to my heart.  I love that my church is community-minded.  I love that they look for ways to share their bounty with others.  I love the deep biblical roots of sharing the fruits of the land with those in need.  I love spending a Saturday morning hanging out at the farm stand, chatting with church friends and meeting folks as they come by.  I love that other people in the community — not even associated with the church — have started bringing their excess veggies to the farmers market to share.

I’ve decided to start filling my freezer with baked goodies, gearing up for next month’s distribution.  It should be easy when you have time to plan ahead.  When I make something like muffins or cookies, I’ll make extra and sock them away in our chest freezer.  So far, I have four dozen Chubby Hubby cookies waiting patiently for the next market.  I’m also planning to make some quiches to add to the breakfast table, thanks to the abundance of zucchini that has been raining down upon us lately.

What’s a chubby hubby? (I know it isn’t JS–he’s too skinny from all that running.)

This is a great idea–what a wonderful church thing to do!

Ha ha. I didn’t give them the name. They have chopped pretzels, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and peanuts. Sort of a “kitchen sink” cookie. Yum!

Sharing produce is such a wonderful idea. You sound so happy with your new home and community.

This is supremely wonderful, if there were such a phrase. I am so impressed!! This is truly what Jesus would do. I am touched just hearing about it all!
