The Mouse Aquatic (2012 Update)
July 30th, 2012
Two years ago, I wrote a post with the same title that included a video of Miss Mouse frolicking in the pool at my parents’ condo. Two years later, my girl still likes the water. And now, she’s taking big girl swim lessons. I get choked up every time I watch.
There’s something about watching her in the pool with her teacher that hits me in the tear ducts. She loves her lessons (and her teacher). She hasn’t been fussy or timid or whiny. She’s just confident and happy.
She hefts her little body onto her kickboard or her bright yellow swim noodle and kicks valiantly. She dons ridiculously endearing purple and pink goggles, purposefully places one hand over the other, and “streamlines” into the pool with her teacher guiding her hands and holding her belly.
She floats trustingly on her back and stands on the side of the pool practicing “chicken, airplane, solider” — which is, apparently, how one learns the backstroke. Go figure.
I think perhaps it’s the fact that I’m not directly involved in the swim lessons. I sit on the side and observe. I’m not trying to get her to do her strokes, or keep her afloat, or even cheer on her on (I’m supposed to be quiet). I can just sit back and marvel at how grown up my baby has become.
