That’s a picture of 100 buttons. Miss Mouse meticulously laid them out this evening on the dining room table.
Why, you ask?
Well, it just so happens that tomorrow is Miss Mouse’s 100th day of class at her school. The teacher asked all the kids to bring in 100 of something to celebrate the day and Miss Mouse opted to raid my treasure trove of random buttons. It’s a big trove, and she had a blast.
Because this is Montessori, there’s a reason for the activity beyond simple pleasure — of course! Throughout the year, the kids have been keeping track of their school attendance using beads, learning how to stack them into groups of ten to achieve larger numbers. The “bring 100” exercise was a way of practicing this skill at home.
Miss Mouse very carefully laid out ten rows of ten buttons each, pausing after each row was completed to count her rows and gauge her progress. She takes her work seriously and was very proud of herself when she got them all lined up.
I wish I could come to school with her tomorrow to see what everyone else brings in!
