Honk If You Love Chocolate
January 9th, 2013
If you’re looking for an out-of-the-ordinary and very kid-friendly dessert some cold winter’s evening, may I suggest chocolate fondue?
I grew up eating cheese fondue with my parents and it’s one of my favorite meals in the world. My *ahem* culinarily challenged husband and children have been slow to embrace this particular food event, but I’m still trying.
This weekend, we had a fondue meal that went pretty well. I served two kinds of cheese fondue (cheddar/beer and Swiss/white wine) as the main course, with bread chunks, fingerling potatoes, apple slices, and steamed broccoli as dunkers. It was the first time I’d expanded beyond bread cubes and I was thrilled with the other additions. Buggie gamely skewered things and munched happily, while Miss Mouse stalwartly refused to try either kind of cheese. Sigh.
Then for dessert, we did chocolate fondue. All parties heartily endorsed this decision. We used a simple recipe that combines chocolate chips, butter, and sweetened condensed milk. Dunkers included fresh strawberries, bananas, blackberries, and raspberries, marshmallows, Nilla wafers, and pretzels. We got a little carried away. But it was so much fun and so delicious!
The kids had a blast picking their dunkers and sloshing them around in chocolate and I confess I also found the experience magical. There also happens to be a nice quantity of left-over chocolate sauce that will be making an appearance on ice cream in the near future!
