Just because your day starts out a little rough doesn’t mean it can’t be redeemed. Last night, we drove up to Cincinnati to my aunt’s house with plans to go to the Cincinnati Zoo today. I awoke this morning at 6:30am to the sound of pouring rain and the realization that Buggie had just puked in my bed. It wasn’t an auspicious beginning to our adventure. But we rallied. Having yakked profusely, Buggie seemed much improved. In fact, it actually took me a minute to figure out which big kid was the source of the incident as they both appeared
Read More

We spent time this weekend in western Kentucky. Josh’s big brother was graduating from college (hooray!!!) and Josh’s family gathered to celebrate this awesome event. I love my husband’s family. He’s the second of five kids and the sibs are all really close. Not to mention really fun. Led by boisterous, frequently-inappropriate-but-always-hilarious Big Brother Donnie, family shindigs are always a hoot. This get-together was extra cool because of the kids. I adore my own family and have several cousins with whom I was close as a child. Unfortunately, geography and career paths have led us in different directions and
Read More

When Miss Mouse was tiny, I spent a lot of emotional energy looking forward. I couldn’t wait for her to be able to roll. To sit up. To crawl. To walk. To try solid foods. All of those milestones that happen in the first year were cause for much anticipation and celebration. With Buggie, I think I lived in the moment a little bit more. I savored his baby-ness and made sure we spent lots of time noozling together. But I was still excited to watch him progress from tiny creature to sprightly little man.
We had a birthday party to go to today. It was for a little girl in Miss Mouse’s class who was turning four. Or five. I’m not sure. In any case, the party snuck up on us and I wasn’t able to order the necessary supplies for my go-to gift of “personalized play dough kit.” I found myself needing to buy a present from a store. Which is a bit of a challenge here. Oh, it’s not hard to find presents. We do have several Walmart Super Centers within striking distance. But I find the toy aisles of Walmart overwhelming
Read More

Although for most of the night, Little Bird snoozes in bed with me, each evening she starts out swaddled like a burrito in her crib. While eventually said crib will live in the beautifully-decorated alcove of the master bedroom, at the moment it lives here: If you’re thinking to yourself — “Um, that looks like a bathroom” — you are correct. Little Bird’s bedroom for the time being is the downstairs bathroom. We put a piece of plywood across the top of the tub and her crib perches up there. Humbly, Kate After being the target of a tireless plead campaign, I finally broke down and bought “The Little Mermaid” for Miss Mouse. We watched it tonight for the first time… …and I loved it. It’s champagne mango season and I took advantage of the bounty in our house to create a new granola recipe: Mango Coconut. Mmmm. Mango Coconut Granola 2 cups old-fashioned oats 1/4 cup wheat germ 1 cup flaked coconut (I used sweetened) 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup Mango Sauce (see below) 3 T plus 2 tsp cooking oil
Read More

The only catch is, she’s only happy when I’m standing up. If I sit down with her in the carrier, she immediately protests. So I spend a lot of time on my feet. I watch TV standing, put my computer on
Read More
